The Fabric is an unfathomably large virtual construct built from a seemingly endless expanse of servers from across the UniSys community. It is the 25th century interstellar internet, controlled and built entirely on AI technology. It is constantly changing and evolving, forming an entire alternate synthetic reality that is inhabited by AIs and the avatars of anyone with an implanted Neural Interface Device (NID). The Fabric also exists as a basic data network, providing something akin to ‘cloud’ based services, only on a much broader and more flexible scale.
The Fabric is split into smaller portions called ‘Spaces’, similar to the concept of sites. The Fabric is not limited to the typical three dimensions, and virtual space constructs can be of any flavor the creator desires. Each creator of a space can do with it as they please within the bounds of UniSys law (one is not permitted to replicate any existing place within the real world for security reasons). ‘Real estate’ does not exist within the Fabric, as it is a completely redundant concept within a limitless environment. Therefore, money is made exclusively by exchange of services.
